What is a Community Interest Company (CiC)?

WILDWISE enterprises cic

CIC is a special type of limited company which exists to benefit the community rather than private shareholders.

To set up a CIC, you need:

  • a ‘community interest statement’, explaining your business plans
  • an ‘asset lock’- a legal promise stating that the company’s assets will only be used for its social objectives, and setting limits to the money it can pay to shareholders
  • a constitution
  • to get your company approved by the community interest regulator

WildWise set up a CiC organisation, WildWise Enterprises, in 2019 as we felt this business structure would offer the best vehicle to scale up our provision of nature based programmes for communities and would enable us to best reach those who find access to the outdoors, and the benefits that brings, a challenge.
